Study Skills
Time management, organization, study skills, retention strategies and test taking strategies are vital to students seeking to optimize their academic potential
The following are the individual element that will be addressed to improve study skills:
Mindset
Understanding Mindset provides students insight to how they learn. Knowing their learning style helps students to understand what strategies are best based on the way their brains most naturally process information. When individuals understands how they learn, they can take steps to using those strategies that work best for them.
Organization of Materials and Time
Organization does not come naturally to many, especially students diagnosed with a variety of learning differences, like ADD and ADHD. Students will learn how to manage their materials and create and maintain planners, both short and long-term, in order to keep track of notes, worksheets, homework and important information that is covered in class. Additionally, students will be coached in how to keep up with the variety of information sources made available to them through the technologies being offered by their schools.
Reading and Note Taking
A variety of strategies for reading different types of texts must be taught and practiced to insure implementation. Directed reading approaches SQ3R, Active Reading, and Annotation to show students how to most effectively read their textbooks and literary books. Students also the learn the most effective approaches to note taking and are encouraged to use those approaches as models and develop strategies that work best for them.
Memory Strategies
Retrieval can be difficult for many. But with right tricks and techniques, retrieval is made easier. Students learn a variety of memory strategies to help them retain and recall information. Better strategies for retrieval improve confidence and reduce text anxiety.
Test Preparation and Test Taking
Students will learn how to plan for and take test. They will learn various strategies and techniques for the different types of tests they my may encounter.
